Conspire Day 2 -- Multi-Site Issues for Children's Ministry

Multi-Site Issues for Children's Ministry with Tony Escobar & Tammy Melchien

This was the first breakout session that I signed up and was really excited to be in it. I've been reading Tammy's blog for about a year now and had an opportunity to talk with Tammy before the session, she's actually the first person that I've talked to after only knowing them through the blogosphere.

Tammy and Tony did a great job explaining how Christian Community Church reproduces their children's ministry across their multiple campuses. For some incredible resources check out this link and click on "A07 Multi-site Issues for Children's Ministry". This is a word document that lists several of their charts. You can also check out Tammy's blog for job descriptions.

The first question that Tammy asked was a good one, "Do you know what you want to reproduce?" Another way to put it is what is your DNA? It's a great exercise that I plan to share with my team when I get back.

A couple of other nuggets that I can share with out using the diagrams on the notes I mentioned earlier are...
  • The role of the staff is to equip others for ministry. I've heard this several times before and whole-heatedly agree. But it was this statement along with it that makes it stand out, "Move beyond just recruiting volunteers to intentionally developing leaders." Tony put it this way, we want to people to be owners not renters. Owners of a house care for it, build into it, and improve it. Renters use it, expect others to fix it, and will eventually (quickly) leave it for something else.
  • Key Staffing Learnings: Leadership Expertise vs. Kid Expertise. Few people are both, and in director, coordinator, and leadership roles we want Leadership Experts even though they might not be kid experts. People who work directly with kids are the ones we want to be kid experts.
  • The Service Coordinator is something I would love to develop.
